Always back up your data. And I don't mean rely on a streaming service's benevolence, or a cloud storage platform to always be accessible. I mean have a physical object somewhere that contains a backup copy of the digital things you want to save. This can be as simple as memory cards bought from a major retailer (32-64 GB microSD cards and flash drives are going for $4-$15 on Newegg these days, and 500 GB portable hard drives are around $30).
To increase your storage space on a budget, well, one option is to wait for a computer to die. As long as the hard drive isn’t the source of the problem, you’ve got a storage device right there. Just unscrew the hard drive from inside the computer, and put it in an adapter case that allows it to be used as a portable hard drive. I currently have well over two terabytes of backup storage just from old hard drives. I keep the stuff I really love (music collection, photos, weird personal projects) backed up across each device that’s got capacity for them.
And that means some of my rarer CDs and DVDs have backups. An early 90s compilation CD of folk-punk from around the world that’s never had a digital release? Backed up. Locally-produced DVDs that were only ever distributed at a tiny film festival? Backed up. Same with digital media--sure, copies of big sellers are going to be available for decades. But remixes made by aspiring artists? Songs that don’t sell well enough for a label to care about? There are five year old songs in my collection that have already disappeared from streaming and youtube.
But I’ve got copies. I can go back and pull out stuff my friends have lost. I can find stuff I got sick of years ago, and I get the chance to love it again. With so much of corporate-owned media obsessed with pushing you ever-onward to the newest, most profitable thing, the ability to enjoy the old and obscure is important.

As someone who’s been Frankensteining PCs together from the leftovers from other people’s upgrades for over twenty years now, I want to let y’all know that building/repairing a desktop PC* is not hard. The hardest part for me is going through the specs for motherboards/CPUs/memory and making sure everything’s compatible, and if you’re doing a major upgrade, sites like Newegg often sell bundles of components guaranteed to work together.
Some PC manufacturers do try to make it harder because they want you to buy a whole new computer from them instead of replacing one component. I recommend building your own from scratch if you can, or, if that’s too intimidating, having a trusted friend build you one that you can then work on upgrading piece by piece to build your confidence. However, if you can’t afford that (gods know I couldn’t if I hadn’t originally built my computer when I was living with family), grit your teeth, go slowly, and remember to chant, “Die capitalist scum, die,” whenever you encounter an unexpected difficulty.
You will need:
A Phillips-head screwdriver. Just average sized, not huge or tiny. (So technical! So specific! But seriously, I’ve had no problems using whatever’s handy.)
A container in which to put your screws. You can use a Solo cup for this, or a plastic container for leftovers, or even flip over an empty paper drink cup and use the shallow container formed by the bottom part. I’m not judging. Just make sure the lil fuckers can’t roll away and hide under your desk for the rest of time.
A large flat surface (desk, countertop, kitchen table, etc).
If you’re doing anything with the CPU/motherboard (CPU used here to mean “the chip about the size of a large coin that functions as your computer’s brain”, not “the entire box”), have some rubbing alcohol, q-tips, and thermal paste handy. (I use Arctic Silver.)**
You will probably find it nice to have:
A flashlight. Headlamps/small flashlights you can hold in your mouth have worked best for me, since you don’t have to give up the use of a hand so you can see, but I did yesterday’s motherboard swap with just my phone’s LED, and that went fine.
A can of compressed air. You don’t need this if you’re building from scratch, but if you haven’t cracked the case in a while... well, dust happens. So does pet hair. A can of air will clear that shit away without the risk of getting tiny spit droplets on your sensitive electronic components. (I’ve blown dust away and it’s been fine, but still, compressed air is better if you have the time and spare cash to get some.)
A personal grounding strap to keep static from zapping your components. I have literally never used one -- I just frequently touch the exposed metal parts of my PC case, and that keeps the static from happening -- but if it gives you peace of mind, go for it, they’re like $5.
Speccy. It’s a free program that will show you all your components and specs, which is great for me because no fucking way do I remember anything about parts I installed five years ago. I always check Speccy before ordering new components, to make sure everything will play nicely together.
A phone or tablet you can use to google for additional help.
That’s it, that’s all you need to fiddle around with your computer’s guts.

If you’re replacing a component, at this point, your job is to find the thing, unplug any cables that go into it, take it out of your computer, put the new one in, plug the cables back in, and you’re good to go. Your component will usually have instructions showing you what goes where. If it doesn’t, google is your friend.
Things to keep in mind:
Components should fit neatly into place, and you shouldn’t force them. However, things like memory sticks and video cards can take a bit of pressure to slot into place, so finding that sweet spot between “super gentle” and “forcing and possibly breaking your components” will be terrifying the first few times. Or at least, it will if you’re anything like my high-anxiety self. To make it less terrifying: use your light source to get in there and be sure it’s lined up properly with the slot. Double- and triple-checking is a good thing when you’re starting out. If there are clips to hold the component in place, make sure they’re disengaged. Also, don’t go from gentle push to slamming your whole body weight down on it: slowly increase the pressure as you push. Although it’s possible to break something if you just force it in without paying much attention, my generally careless and clumsy self has never had this happen, even once, so just make sure you’re putting the thing in the right place and you should be fine.
If you have to take the cooler off your CPU, note that it will probably take some messing around to get it off. You will not break it. Just go slow and keep breathing.
Once the cooler is off your CPU, you’ll want to take your q-tip and alcohol and carefully wipe away the old, dried-up thermal paste, because it’s not going to conduct heat so well anymore now that you’ve messed with it. Before you put the cooler back, draw an X on the CPU with your tube of fresh thermal paste. That’s all you need to do.
And those are all the basic things I wish someone had told me when I was starting out.
My biggest piece of advice, though? Find friends who also build their own computers, because then the magic of the upgrade chain takes place. My childhood computer was made out of hand-me-down parts, where my mom would get an upgrade, and her old part would go to my stepdad, and then his old part would go to me. Brand new components were special things, that would show up very rarely for my birthday and Yule, but otherwise, my computers were entirely dependent on the upgrade chain. If you’re poor, having an upgrade chain going with your friends can be a wonderful source of unexpected free upgrades, which can make the difference between an out of date computer that can still play most games, and a constantly-crashing piece of shit that makes you want to cry when you try to run anything.
* I’m sure there’s someone who’s like, “Who even uses desktops anymore?” and the answer is a) gamers, and b) people who are on their computers all day and want to not be in major pain, because laptops are a goddamn ergonomic nightmare and so as someone with chronic pain, I hate them. If your laptop is causing you pain, I can’t recommend an ergonomic desktop setup enough.
** Remember how I mentioned some PC manufacturers will make things harder on you? The one and only prebuilt PC I’ve ever owned -- a gift -- had an unnecessarily large CPU cooler that had to be removed completely in order to get to the power supply. After my power supply died, I had to deal with all the bullshit involved in replacing it, and vowed to never again use a pre-built PC because fuck that shit. And I always keep thermal paste handy, just in case.

People try to sell the weirdest shit on Craigslist. This is from 2006: it’s the upgraded model of the first laptop I ever owned. Somehow, this person managed to get Windows 10 running on it. And they’re asking $525 for it.
This is old enough hardware that I can barely give accurate performance comparison numbers to equivalently priced current hardware, since almost no one has done the same set of benchmarks on 2006 and 2018 devices. No one would even consider doing such a thing.
However, I cannot resist the call of making fun of ancient hardware (and, more usefully, trying to quantify the past 12 years of computer engineering). I cannot and I will not. It would be defying my nature.
The Acer Aspire 5 A517-51G-54GK is presently $500 on Newegg. Shipping is free. There is tax on top of that, but you are legally supposed to pay that tax if you buy something from Craigslist, so this arguably makes no difference. It is on sale, and in a few days this link may not say $500, but something similar will take its place. It’s just the way things work. Here’s how it stacks up:
Physical:
Battery: The Aspire 5, very broadly speaking, might net you 6 hours of light use on a charge. The M1710 lasted about 2 hours when it was brand-new... so I’m betting 12 years later it’ll die in a good 15 minutes.
Weight: The Aspire 5 weighs 6.6 pounds, three quarters the weight of the 8.8 pound M1710 (which, amusingly, “isn’t as bad as you might think” according to a review from when it launched). It’s also ~30% thinner, but neither is slim. Its power brick is also half the weight of the M1710’s, due to its much lower power requirements.
Trackpad: It’s about twice as large, by my estimation. Take my word for it, the Dell’s is absolutely tiny by 2018 standards. The physical buttons are nice, though.
Display: It’s not much different. The Aspire should have significantly better viewing angles, and I’m not sure how either’s color reproduction is, but the M1710 had a great display for its day.
Ports: The USB3 ports on the Aspire 5 are 10x faster than the USB2 ports on the M1710. The rest of the ports are, disappointingly, not much better than those of 12 years ago besides an SD card slot. And it has 0x the number of DVD burners, and no modem either.
Speed:
CPU: The most egregious shortcomings of the M1710 will be in the Core 2 Duo’s lack of hardware acceleration for specific tasks rather than raw performance. The one benchmark I could find, however, puts the Aspire’s i5 at just over double the performance of a 12-year-old (albeit top-of-the-line) chip: not that impressive. There’s a reason it’s relegated to super-budget devices. At least it draws less than half as much power.
GPU: The M1710’s lovingly-hand-installed Quadro FX 3500M was top-notch in its day, but it doesn’t support modern graphics APIs like DirectX 12. ...Or 11. ...Or 10. In the few relevant games it will play well, the Aspire 5’s last-year-vintage GT940MX probably outperforms it by 3-4x, but I couldn’t find anything apples-to-apples, or really even apples-to-a-fruit.
Storage: This one’s fun. The solid state drive in the Aspire 5 will do large file copies around 5x faster than a 2006-era spinning drive, but in random read/write scenarios like opening or installing programs, it’s a greater than 100x speedup. Obviously, that doesn’t make the system 100x faster, but it still removes the storage bottleneck in many common tasks.
Memory: The Aspire 5 ships with 2x the memory capacity of the upgraded-to-the-max M1710. I feel like memory capacity has stalled in the past decade, but I’d need to do more research to confirm that.
Wireless: Using naive theoretical comparisons, the Aspire’s 1x1 802.11AC solution is 8x faster and supports the much-less-congested 5GHz band.
So, conclusions?
First of all, >$500 is laughable for this ancient machine, 89% discount from the original MSRP notwithstanding. Even if we move down the price range of modern devices to roughly match it in speed and specs, there’s no compelling reason to buy a 9-pound completely unsupported device that’s barely capable of running a modern OS, let alone most programs.
But, honestly? I was expecting a bit more from 12 years of computer upgrades, somehow. Now, to be fair, we’re comparing a $4700 machine to a $500 one, and a modern $2500-$3000 device like the Aero 15X obliterates both of these devices in every possible respect.

But... I don’t know! The idea that a 12-year-old device is useable at all caught me off guard. In some ways, that’s disappointing, but in other ways, it’s a good thing: the idea that society ought to be throwing out all of our not-particularly-recyclable electronics every couple of years isn’t a sustainable one.
In a way, I’m making fun of this seller, mostly for their asking price, but in another way I admire them: they kept a machine working and useable for 12 years. We need more of that.
Besides, the red is pretty unique, I guess.

Hoy recibí las últimas partes que necesitaba para mi nueva PC: ventiladores Be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 (2x1400 mm. H.S., 1x120 mm. H.S.), un cable divisor 4 pin 1 a 3 (Silverstone CPF02, al cual no tomé foto), un HDD (1 TB, WD10EZEX para almacenamiento secundario... tampoco hay foto) y Windows 10 Home 64 bits. Eso último es triste, pero no pude evitarlo por 3 razones:
1.- No hay soporte oficial de Microsoft para procesadores Ryzen, sino solamente con Windows 10.
2.- No encontré información uniforme sobre configuración de SSDs para Windows 7 (Y las FAQs y foros de soporte de Microsoft no son menos ambiguos)... Unos dicen desactiva esto y aquello; otros dicen que tal o cual no es necesario.
3.- Soporte de DX12 sólo en Windows 10... aunque parece que DX11 sigue siendo la API más usada por desarrolladores.
Y pues bueno, instalé los ventiladores y el HDD. Terminé de arreglar el cableado. Seguía actualizar el BIOS, instalar Windows, drivers y cuanta basura uno necesita, pero me dio pereza.
En fin, yo quería ventiladores Noctua, pero fue imposible conseguirlos en México (sin pagar un sobreprecio escandaloso). Ningún retailer mexicano los vende. Tampoco los tenía Amazon México. Y aunque Amazon U.S.A., U.K., y CAN los tienen, no los envían a México. Newegg U.S.A. y Amazon España si los enviaban, pero acababa pagando en envío e impuestos más de lo que valen los ventiladores.
Así que me decidí por los Silent Wings 3, después de regresar los Corsair de levitación magnética (caros y ruidosos).
Esto de procastinar se me ha ido de las manos. En abril de este año AMD sacará a la venta su nueva linea de procesadores... y yo aquí, sin terminar de ensamblar un sistema Ryzen.
No ha sido todo mi culpa, digo yo: hubo líos de BIOS y microcódigo los primeros meses después del lanzamiento de Ryzen en marzo de 2017, así que no tenía sentido ensamblar entonces.
Después, había escasez de RAM con el Samsung B-Die (Single Ranked RAM, capaz de alcanzar 3200 MHz con latencias bajas).
Y también tuve problemas para conseguir el disipador (Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4), porque los productos Noctua son difíciles de conseguir en México (lo pedí de Amazon U.K.), y porque durante los primeros meses después del lanzamiento del socket AM4 los disipadores compatibles estaban escasos.
¡Ah, pero que pereza me da de sólo pensar en instalar Windows! O más bien, la idea de pasar horas configurando cosas a mi gusto, instalar software y demás.

ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D Review: Inexpensive, Well-performing
AMD’s RX 5500 XT release in December 2019 targeted the entry-level 1080p gaming segment and was, overall, received well by the public. In particular, the 8GB variants are enticing, as they don't take the performance hit of the 4GB cards in certain titles, though for now the card hasn't managed to break into our best graphics cards guide. That's partly because budget cards are pretty far down the GPU hierarchy, with higher pricing than many competing cards. The ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D we're reviewing comes with the full 8GB of VRAM, a factory overclock, an attractive price and a dual-fan cooling solution designed to keep the card cool and quiet while gaming.
Performance of the Phantom Gaming D was just where we expected it, competing with the other RX 5500 XT 8GB variants tested. It ends up faster than the GeForce GTX 1650 Super and slower than the Geforce GTX 1660. Compared to the other 8GB RX 5500 XT cards we've tested, the ASRock performed the same with less than 1% difference between them. The card averages almost 72 frames per second (fps) at 1080p using ultra settings across all games. Only Metro: Exodus and Borderlands 3 fell below the 60 fps threshold (37.7 and 42.9 fps, respectively). When lowering the settings to medium, the average increased to 102 fps and all titles were above the 60 fps threshold and ran smoothly.
At the time of writing, the ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D is $199.99 on Newegg, the least expensive 8GB card in this roundup. It also comes with the Resident Evil 3 remaster, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint and three months of Xbox Game Pass for PC. We pit the ASRock against Gigabyte’s RX 5500 XT Gaming 8G at $219.99, the Asus ROG Strix RX 5500 XT O8G Gaming for $229.99, and the 4GB Sapphire Pulse RX 5500 XT priced at $179.99. Between the 8GB cards, there is a $30 price difference while the 4GB model used for testing is $20 cheaper.
On the Nvidia side of things, the Zotac GTX 1650 Super has the lowest price at $159.99 while the Zotac GTX 1660 is $239.99, the most expensive card in this article. We’ll detail how the ASRock card performed against its peers and competition, how well it performed thermally, and other important details so you can make a more informed buying decision.
Features
All Radeon RX 5500 XT’s use the Navi 14 GPU and first-generation RDNA architecture. TSMC produced the 7nm die with 6.4 million transistors cut into a 158mm² area. This includes 1,408 shaders, 32 ROPs, and 88 TMUs across 22 Compute Units (CUs). Clocks speeds on the ASRock Phantom Gaming D are 1,737 MHz Game clock and 1,845 MHz boost clock—a 57 MHz increase over the reference clock speed (1,680 MHz) and the same as the Asus ROG Strix used here.
The 8GB of GDDR6 memory sits on a 128-bit bus and runs at 1,750 MHz (14 Gbps)—the standard speed for the Navi 14 GPU. This configuration yields 224 GB/s bandwidth, and the RX 5500 XT comes in 4GB and 8GB variants. Unless you plan to game at 1080p using reduced settings, you’ll want to get the 8GB over the 4GB cards. With VRAM needs increasing as time goes on, 4GB is now considered the minimum for most users while 6-8GB for those who would like to use ultra settings.
AMD’s RX 5500 XT’s Total Board Power (TBP) is listed at 130W and recommends a 450W power supply. ASRock, like most board partners, does not list the TBP for the Phantom Gaming D, though it raises AMD’s power supply recommendation of 450W up to 500W. Actual power use will vary between partner cards due to higher clock speeds and where the power limit is set. Feeding power to the card is a single 8-pin PCIe connector capable of delivering more power than this card will need, including any overclocking.

The ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D is a two-slot video card measuring 9.5 x 5 x 1.6 inches (241 x 127 x 42mm). Though the heatsink extends past the PCB lengthwise, the card’s overall length should allow it to fit in most chassis, including some small form factor (SFF) builds. Be sure to verify the space inside your case before buying this or any other video card.
Covering the heatsink and surrounding the two 85mm fans (which have a 0db silent cooling feature) is a plastic shroud that fits with the ASRock Phantom Gaming theme, including black and red accents along with a faux brushed aluminum finish. The rear of the card is protected by a backplate, also matching the card’s theme, and doubles as a passive heatsink via thermal pads.
The Phantom Gaming D adds a bit of RGB flare as well with the Phantom Gaming name and symbol illuminated on the top of the card. For its size, the color is bright and saturated, though being so small it won’t take over the inside of your case.
In order to keep the card cool, ASRock uses a dual-fan setup along with a good size heatsink. The GPU die makes contact with the heatsink through a copper plate, which then sends the heat into the fin array via three large copper heatpipes. The heatsink cools all critical parts of the video card including the VRMs and memory, all of which connect to the fin array through an aluminum plate.
The ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D3 routes power through a 6+1 phase VRM with the GPU and VRAM controlled by two OnSemi NCP81022 (4-phase) controllers. The GDDR6 chips on this card are made by Samsung and specified to run at 1,750 MHz (14 Gbps). This configuration will deliver plenty of clean power to handle both stock and overclocked operations.
Outputs on the Phantom Gaming D are standard fare consisting of three DisplayPorts (1.4 with DSC 1.2a) and a single HDMI (2.0b) output. This should be plenty for most users.
How We Tested the ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D
Our current graphics card test system consists of Intel's Core i9-9900K, an 8-core/16-thread CPU that routinely ranks as the fastest overall gaming CPU. The MSI MEG Z390 Ace motherboard is paired with 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB DDR4-3200 CL16 memory (CMK32GX4M2B3200C16). Keeping the CPU cool is a Corsair H150i Pro RGB AIO, along with a 120mm Sharkoon fan for general airflow across the test system. Storing our OS and gaming suite is a single 2TB Kingston KC2000 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 drive.
The motherboard is running BIOS version 7B12v16. Optimized defaults were used to set up the system. We then enabled the memory's XMP profile to get the memory running at the rated 3200 MHz CL16 specification. No other BIOS changes or performance enhancements were enabled. The latest version of Windows 10 (1909) is used and is fully updated as of February 2020.
Our GPU hierarchy provides a complete overview of graphics cards and how the various models stack up against each other. For these individual third-party card reviews, we include GPUs that compete with and are close in performance to the card being reviewed. On the AMD side, we have the Sapphire Pulse RX 5500 XT, Asus ROG Strix RX 5500 XT O8G Gaming and the Gigabyte RX 5500 XT Gaming OC. Nvidia cards include the Zotac GTX 1650 Super and the Zotac GTX 1660 Amp.
Our list of test games is currently Battlefield V, Borderlands 3, The Division 2, Far Cry 5, Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, Forza Horizon 4, Gears of War 5, Metro Exodus, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Strange Brigade. These titles represent a broad spectrum of genres and APIs, which gives us a good idea of the performance differences between the cards. We're using driver build 441.20 for the Nvidia cards and Adrenalin 2020 Edition 19.12.2 for AMD cards, although the 5600 XT was tested using 20.1.2 beta drivers.
We capture our frames per second (fps) and frame time information by running OCAT during our benchmarks. For clock and fan speed, temperature and power, we use GPU-Z's logging capabilities. We'll be resuming our use of the Powenetics-based system from previous reviews in the near future.
Beginning with the 1080p ultra results, the ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D averaged 71.9 fps across all titles. At these settings, all but three titles—Metro: Exodus (37.7 fps), The Division 2 (57.9 fps) and Borderlands 3 (42.9 fps)—are able to average at least 60 fps and provide a smooth gaming experience. All of AMD’s RX 5500 XT cards are capable 1080p ultra video cards, though some games will need to reduce settings to reach 60 fps.
Looking at the other RX 5500 XT cards in this review, the ASRock card is just as fast as the other 8GB variants—all averaging over 71 fps with the Asus O8G Gaming averaging 71.7 fps and the Gigabyte 71.3 fps. The Sapphire Pulse RX 5500 XT 4GB is well behind at 63 fps (or 13% slower) because some titles showed a severe performance drop due to the 4GB memory and PCIe 3.0 x8 configuration.
If we include the two Nvidia based GPUs, our ASRock review card is almost 4% faster than the much less expensive Zotac GTX 1650 Super (69.3 fps average), and over 6% slower than the slightly more expensive Zotac GTX 1660 Amp (76.6 average). Since these Turing based video cards do not support ray tracing or DLSS, the decision between some of these cards will come down to price, performance (both thermal and fps) and card features.
Staying at 1080p resolution but lowering the image quality settings to medium allowed all the games to reach over 60 fps. The ASRock Phantom Gaming D averaged 102 fps along with the Asus. The Gigabyte Gaming OC averaged 101 fps—all are within 1% of each other, which is basically the margin of error for our testing and wouldn’t be noticeable in gaming.
At these settings, the Sapphire Pulse didn’t choke on its 4GB of VRAM with medium settings and ended up only 4% behind. Most games were over 80 fps with a few (The Division 2, Strange Brigade, Final Fantasy XIV, Forza Horizon 4 and Battlefield V) averaging well over 100 fps. Dropping down to the medium settings shows a significant performance increase over ultra.
Performance differences between the ASRock Phantom Gaming D and the Nvidia cards are similar to the 1080p ultra results, with the GTX 1650 Super about 5% slower and the GTX 1660 almost 4% faster. This is a more CPU bound setting so the performance gaps tend to shrink at these settings compared to higher resolutions and image quality.
We use GPU-Z logging to measure each card's power consumption with the Metro Exodus benchmark running at 2560 x 1440 using the default ultra settings. The card is warmed up prior to testing and logging is started after settling to an idle temperature (after about 10 minutes). The benchmark is looped a total of five times, which yields around 10 minutes of testing. In the charts, you will see a few blips in power use that are a result of the benchmark ending one loop and starting the next.
We also use FurMark to capture worst-case power readings. Although both Nvidia and AMD consider the application a "power virus," or a program that deliberately taxes the components beyond normal limits, the data we can gather from it offers useful information about a card's capabilities outside of typical gaming loads. For example, certain GPU compute workloads including cryptocurrency mining have power use that can track close to FurMark, sometimes even exceeding it.
Starting with the gaming tests, the ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D averaged 114W, the most of all RX 5500 XT cards tested so far. The Asus was just behind it at 104W, the Sapphire Pulse at 102W, followed by the Gigabyte sipping power at 89W. As an end-user, you will be hard-pressed to see these differences on your power bill. We also need to be cognizant that our current recording method, GPU-Z only records the chip power and not Total Board Power (TBP) for AMD GPUs. This means actual power use is going to be a bit higher on these cards.
The Zotac GTX 1650 Super averaged 97W—a few watts lower than most of the RX 5500 XT’s we’ve tested. The faster Zotac GTX 1660 Amp (not pictured in the chart) used even less power at 89W. This shows that Nvidia’s 12nm Turing architecture is still slightly more efficient than the 7nm Navi, considering the difference in lithography.
Power consumption using Furmark shows much more consistent power use across the test. In this case, The ASRock averaged 129W with the Asus and Sapphire cards both using 133W. The Gigabyte again comes in the lowest reaching 122W. The GTX 1650 Super barely budged from the game tests averaging 99W, which is less power than all of the RX 5500 XT cards we’ve tested.
Temperatures, Fan Speeds and Clock Rates
To see how each video card behaves with temperatures and fan speeds, like the power testing, we use GPU-Z logging in one-second intervals to capture data. These items are captured by looping the Metro Exodus benchmark five times, running at 2560x1440 and ultra settings.
Additionally, we also use FurMark to capture the data below, which offers a more consistent load and uses slightly more power, regardless of the fact that the clock speeds and voltages are limited. These data sets give insight into worst-case situations along with a non-gaming workload.
Gaming
Temperatures for the ASRock Phantom Gaming D averaged almost 62 degrees Celsius during gaming testing. This result places it in the middle with the Gigabyte Gaming OC. The Sapphire Pulse ran the warmest at 69 degrees Celsius, at least partly because its fan speeds are lower, while the much larger Asus ROG Strix RX 5500 XT O8G Gaming ran the coolest at 54 degrees Celsius. Though the Phantom Gaming D didn’t have the best cooling solution, it worked quietly and kept the video card running well within specification.
Fan speeds during the Metro: Exodus test show all cards except for the Sapphire Pulse have significantly varying fan speeds. The ASRock varied throughout the test from around 1600 RPM to a peak of 2,000 RPM. The higher fan speeds were more noticeable over the slower spinning Asus and Gigabyte cards, but none were particularly loud or off-putting. During more typical gaming loads (where there isn’t a scene change every 100 seconds) users should not see this fan behavior.
Clock speeds on the ASRock Phantom Gaming D averaged 1,818 MHz during the last phase of the gaming test. This result is over 20 MHz faster than the Sapphire Pulse (1,794 MHz), 10 MHz faster than the Gigabyte and 2 MHz faster than the Aus. This result makes sense considering the 8GB cards' clock speeds are similar out of the box. Another noteworthy fact is how much the 4GB of memory on the Sapphire card affects results with core clock speeds being similar to all the other tested cards.
Furmark
Temperatures in Furmark ran a couple of degrees warmer than game testing across all tested cards. The ASRock Phantom Gaming D and Gigabyte Gaming OC both peaked at 67 degrees Celsius with the Asus again coming in the coolest running at 60 degrees Celsius. The slower Sapphire card peaked at 74 degrees Celsius with a similar size cooling solution as the Phantom Gaming D.
Fan speeds during Furmark testing stabilized across all cards with the ASRock again peaking around 2,000 RPM. Unlike the Asus O8G Gaming, the ASRock Phantom Gaming D maintained these speeds throughout the test. While the ASRock video card doesn’t have the best cooling solution, it kept the card well within specification and did so relatively quietly.
Clock rates during the Furmark testing averaged 1,661 MHz, which is the lowest value by far of all three RX 5500 XT 8GB cards tested. Compared to the game test, the result for the Phantom Gaming D is over 150 MHz less than game testing.
Along with AMD’s software suite that's included with the driver package, ASRock has its own monitoring and tweaking software, named ASRock Tweak. This lightweight application is able to overclock the core and memory speed, though it's manual only—there's no automatic scanner.
The software displays current core and memory speeds, GPU and memory use, along with temperatures and fan speeds. Unlike similar applications from other card partners, ASRock Tweak doesn’t include real-time hardware monitoring in chart form.
Overall, the software works fine for its intended purpose, but it's not as feature-rich as some of the other solutions. More granular control over AMD video cards can be found within the driver software.
The ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D’s testing showed the card to be a competent 1080p ultra gamer across the majority of titles in our test suite. Although it did not have the large cooler and three fans some of the other cards did, the Phantom Gaming D kept the card running well within specification and did so rather quietly—not quite as quiet or as well as the much larger Asus card, but it was effective nonetheless.
Priced at $199.99, the Phantom Gaming D is the least expensive card compared to the other 8GB AMD RX 5500 XT cards we've tested. The Gigabyte is priced at $219.99 and the Asus O8G $229.99. The 4GB Sapphire Pulse is listed at $179.99, though the 4GB VRAM makes it a less desirable choice. Between the 8GB cards, some titles may show one performing slightly better than the other, but it's mostly just typical fluctuations and in the end, they all averaged out to perform the same. Where they set themselves apart is the cooling and other features.
Opening up considerations to Nvidia GPUs, we know the 5500 XT 8GB cards are slightly faster than the less expensive GTX 1650 Super, and a few percent slower than the GTX 1660. The GTX 1660 Super also makes for an intriguing buy as well. Priced from $229.99, it's about 15% faster than the GTX 1660 while being priced around the same. If you can stretch the budget to $230, it does offer a better price to performance ratio than any RX 5500 XT.
Right now, if you want the most well-rounded RX 5500 XT 8GB card, it's the ASRock Phantom Gaming D. While it doesn’t cool as well as the larger Asus card, it cools as good as the Gigabyte Gaming OC version while being smaller, and it costs less. Its two fans spin faster and create more noise than the Gigabyte and Asus cards, but it wasn't intrusive. Outside of that, all three have some form of RGB lighting as well as backplates. The difference between their VRMs won’t affect the ambient overclocker and they're all robust solutions.
Overall, the ASRock RX 5500 XT Phantom Gaming D is a good performing graphics card for both 1080p ultra and 1080p medium settings. As the least expensive 8GB 5500 XT, this card will give you the same performance as more expensive options and does so with a much smaller footprint. If you're looking for a good 1080p ultra/medium video card around the $200 price point, the Phantom Gaming D is a good option.

With QLC, SSD Manufacturers Target Hard Drive’s Final Strength: Raw Capacity
Just over two years ago, Micron became the first company to launch commercial products based on QLC (quad-level cell) technology. Intel followed with consumer-facing products later in 2018. These drives can hold up to four bits of data per cell, but they pay for the additional capacity with lower performance and lower longevity; QLC drives do not support nearly as many program/erase cycles as TLC drives, which are not as robust or as fast as MLC drives. The drop in SSD prices last year may have hampered QLC’s adoption — with all types of NAND storage cheap, QLC didn’t stand out as clearly — but manufacturers are still moving to adopt the technology. Recent leaks on Amazon indicate Samsung is planning to leap into the fray, with SSDs at 1TB and 8TB capacities, the latter priced at just $900.
For years, manufacturers have shown off improbably enormous SSDs with unstated (but equally enormous) price tags. Launching an 8TB SSD with a price tag of $900 works out to 11.2 cents per GB. The cheapest 1TB SSDs right now are below $100, meaning you’d pay around $750 to assemble the cheapest array of 1TB SSDs possible (not counting shipping), or potentially $900 to have all that capacity in a single drive. As capacity charges go, that’s a pretty small one — and it’s part of why we think the advent of QLC will allow SSD manufacturers to pressure HDD manufacturers in the one area where they’ve still held sway: Sheer capacity. An 8TB drive for $900 is a substantially better deal than 4TB for $1500, which is where we were back in 2016.
At the highest end of the market, HDDs will continue to have advantages; nobody is going to drop a reasonably-priced 16TB SSD in the near future, while a 16TB HDD will set you back just $386 according to Newegg.
Pushing QLC capacities higher will help the drives in two specific ways. First, it allows for larger SLC caches. Most QLC drives use an SLC cache to improve performance, with the size of the cache being determined by the base capacity of the drive. Intel’s 512GB 660p SSD has an SLC cache of between 6GB – 76GB depending on how full the drive is, while the 2TB version has an SLC cache of 24-280GB. Samsung will provision its own caching system differently than Intel, but larger drive capacities typically mean larger caches, which means less chance of hitting low performance, even with large file writes.
Second, it indirectly improves drive longevity by increasing the total amount of reserve NAND on the drive and spreading the writes out to a larger number of blocks. SSDs use a technique known as wear-leveling to reduce wear-and-tear on specific areas of the drive. The larger your drive is, the more capacity you have to perform wear-leveling in the first place.
In short, larger QLC drives won’t be free from the weaknesses of the medium, but end-users will be less likely to encounter those weaknesses in day-to-day usage. At the same time, QLC drives — while slower than other SSDs — are much faster than spinning discs, as this THG review of the 660p shows:

These results reflect overall system responsiveness, underscoring the difference between an SSD and HDD. The Intel 660p is about 3 percent slower than an Optane drive, and 2.62x faster than a WD Blue. Obviously we’re leaning on Intel results to give us an idea of how a QLC Samsung drive may perform, but the basic concepts should all transfer — QLC drives are expected to use SLC caches and good drive management to minimize performance impacts, but QLC NAND is slower than TLC or MLC, and if you hit the drive with the right kind of test, those differences will appear.
With Intel now working on PLC (penta-level cell, or 5-bit) NAND, the push is on to shove magnetic disks out of the consumer market altogether, even with respect to capacity. The difference between the $154 price of an 8TB spinning disk and the $900 hypothetical price for an 8TB Samsung QLC drive is smaller, statistically, than the capacity and price differences between SSDs and HDDs that have already been overcome.
Samsung hasn’t even formally announced these drives yet, but thanks to now-defunct Amazon pages, we have the model numbers: MZ-77Q8T0B/AM (8TB) and MZ-77Q1T0B/AM (1TB). 2TB and 4TB models are considered likely. At $900 for 8TB, these drives won’t end the HDD market — but for consumers, at least, the writing is firmly on the wall. 7-8 years ago, the challenge for enthusiasts was buying an SSD that was large enough to be useful without breaking the bank, and many users still relied on HDDs for large-scale storage. We’ve long since passed the “large enough to be useful” stage, and are entering the era where consumer market SSDs are large enough to match the high-capacity drives a customer might consider, at prices close enough to make them think about whether tradeoffs are worth it.
I don’t think hard drives are going to die — enterprise sales remain strong on the whole — but I do think we’ll see fewer and fewer of them in consumer products as time goes by, even at the low-end. That’s not a bad thing.
While I harbor a sneaking admiration for the way HDD manufacturers have repeatedly driven higher capacities over the decade, the single best upgrade to breathe new life into an older PC is an SSD swap. The only thing that even comes close is a RAM upgrade, and only in scenarios where the machine has far less RAM for a given task than it ought to have. In that context, you’re arguably correcting a configuration flaw as opposed to strictly “upgrading” a PC.
Samsung hasn’t announced the hardware yet, so we can’t give you launch dates or full pricing, but we’ll keep an eye on these drives.
